8:30 a.m.          Doors open and sign-in.

9:00 a.m.          Welcome Ramona Shackleford, NCWMA Coordinator

9:05 a.m.         Common woody invasives in the area and impacts to Wisconsin. Matthew Wallrath, Outreach Specialist

9:35 a.m.          Basics of shrub management. Travis Wilson, Research Specialist

10:05 a.m.       Herbicide selection, site assessment, and developing a plan. Mark Renz, Professor & UW-Extension Weed Specialist

  • Example of active management in action.
    • Prentice Park and other demos.
    • Goat grazing vs herbicide and forestry mowing.

 

LUNCH BREAK AND SURVEY:  11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. FREE from Cafe Coco.

FIELD TRIPS: 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

12:00 p.m.       Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge: Buckthorn treatment and restoration. Mitchell Baalman, Wildlife Refuge Specialist.

1:00 p.m.         Prentice Park history and future plans.  Sara Hudson, City of Ashland.

  • Prentice Park Pavilion.

1:15 p.m.         TWO TRACKS SPLIT INTO TWO GROUPS (30 minutes each, then switch)

TRACK A: View control demonstrations at Prentice Park

  • Walk through and explain each approach and results by method and herbicide rate/timing. Highlight costs associated with each approach/herbicide

TRACK B: Demonstrate methods of application

  • Foliar applications tricks
  • basal bark, cut surface, stem injection

2:15 p.m.       Demonstration of forestry mowing. Michael Sinclair of EcoNorth and Al Hastings of Sioux River Services.

3:00 p.m.       Conclusions and questions.

  • Q & A and socializing.

3:30 p.m.       End of the field day event.
