Common and glossy buckthorns, invasive honeysuckles and Japanese barberry are three groups of invasive shrubs that take-over the understory of forests. These shrubs are all ornamental and are still commonly found in yards. If you have any of these species in your yard, the NCWMA encourages you to remove them if you are able to. All of these species produce berries that birds eat and spread the seeds into local forests. So even if the bush is contained in your yard, it may be transported to forests in the area.
